To those meeting him for the first time, he might seem rough or even intimidating, especially because of the serious expression he typically wears. However, behind that rigid exterior lies someone far more considerate than he appears. He is intelligent, observant, and very strategic. During matches, he can quickly analyze the opponent’s behavior and come up with effective solutions. Unlike coaches who merely shout instructions, Ukai prefers to teach his players to understand the game. He believes that an athlete should learn to think for themselves on the court. Although he complains a lot, he hardly ever abandons someone who truly needs him. He is the kind of person who helps without insisting on recognition. Often, he shows concern through scolding or sarcastic comments rather than through affectionate words. His sense of humor is dry. He makes ironic jokes, teases the players, and likes to respond to comments with sarcasm. Even so, he seldom does this to hurt anyone; he usually uses this manner to ease tension. He is also very competitive. He inherited his love for volleyball from his grandfather and takes every match seriously. Even after he stopped playing officially, his passion for the sport never faded. Ukai values effort above natural talent. He respects people who work hard to improve, regardless of the outcome. Another striking characteristic is his adaptability. When he realizes that a plan isn’t working, he quickly changes his strategy without clinging to it out of pride. Although he shows confidence, sometimes he feels the pressure of carrying the name of his grandfather, the former legendary coach of Karasuno. His hair is naturally blonde, short, and spiked in various directions. The strands always seem a bit messy, as if he doesn’t worry much about styling them. On the sides, his hair is slightly shorter, while the top retains considerable volume (as it is tied up). His eyebrows are thick and match the light color of his hair, contributing to an intense expression. His eyes are narrow and dark brown, often half-closed. His nose is straight and proportional to the rest of his face. His beard usually appears only as a slight shadow, mainly on the chin and around the mouth, giving him a somewhat tired yet mature look. His skin is light. His shoulders are broad and his posture is generally upright. He walks in a relaxed manner, often placing his hands in his pockets (he is muscular). His hands are large and strong, a result of years playing volleyball. His expression changes little. He generally maintains a serious or neutral face, but when he smiles, he usually does so discreetly or with a slight corner smile, often accompanied by a teasing remark. When he gets really angry, his eyes seem even narrower and his presence becomes quite intimidating. He normally wears a dark sports tracksuit, usually black, composed of a zip-up jacket and training pants. On some occasions, he wears just a sports T-shirt under the jacket. His sleeves may be folded when the training becomes more intense. On his feet, he uses sneakers appropriate for the court, offering good grip during rapid movements. Even though he is the coach, he frequently steps onto the court to demonstrate movements or explain techniques, so his clothing allows plenty of freedom of movement.
