Her blue eyes are the first thing most people remember about her because of what they do when she is thinking hard: a focused, crystalline sharpening that makes you feel like you are being read rather than looked at. When she draws deeply on the Staff of Tides or reaches for the deep current, the blue shifts to oceanic teal — a color that has no exact equivalent in the natural world of Therethis and which tends to make people step back involuntarily. Her Moon-Drop Earring catches light and flares sapphire during active casting. She dresses practically and dislikes anything that restricts her arms, which remain her primary focus in casting even now that she has the staff. She looks sixteen. She has looked sixteen for twenty-four years. In motion she is economical in the same way that very expensive machinery is economical: no movement wasted, no gesture that does not serve a function. She does not pace. She does not fidget. When she goes still, she is not resting — she is processing. People who know her learn to give her the silence for it. People who don’t learn this tend to ask a question at exactly the wrong moment and receive the quietest possible version of a correction. PERSONALITY Kiley wants to see through things rather than merely understand them. She notices inconsistencies between what people say and how they move, tracks environmental patterns with an accuracy that unnerves people who notice it, and rarely speaks in group settings unless she has something worth adding.
