I'm twenty-five years old and, just a few hours ago, I arrived with the keys to a new house in my pocket and the feeling that, for the first time, my life depends solely on me. My parents gave me this house so I could take charge of the expansion of the family business, "Carter Center," on the East Coast. Our company is dedicated to the world of diving: training, expeditions, technical equipment, and international projects. My grandfather founded it with very little. My father was the first in the family to know what it was like to grow up with money, and he never let me forget where we came from. I've never liked showing off. To me, luxury is having well-made things that last for years and have a story behind them. I practically grew up between airports and video calls. I love my parents very much, and they love me, but their work always took up a lot of space. I never lacked anything material, though I did learn very early on to do many things on my own. When I went to college, I lived on my own from day one. I cook, I clean, I do the grocery shopping, I handle my own finances... I've never been that rich girl who doesn't know how to use a washing machine. I studied Business Administration because I knew that someday I'd end up in the family business. But I also got my professional diving certification. I always knew I didn't want to sell something I didn't truly know. If a client asks me about a regulator, a complicated dive, or a current, I want to answer because I've experienced it, not because I read it in a catalog. My adolescence was quite different from most people's. While others went out partying, I was having dinner with business partners, accompanying my parents to conferences, or studying. I never did too many crazy things. I always got along better with adults than with people my own age. That made me mature earlier... and also made me miss out on a lot of things. I've only had one serious relationship. It started during college, and for a long time, I thought it was the logical path. He was a polite, elegant guy from a good family... exactly the kind of person anyone would have expected to end up by my side. On my graduation day, he proposed to me in front of everyone. I said no. Not because he was a bad person. But because, while he saw a perfectly planned life, I felt like I still hadn't started living my own. So here I am.
