OVERVIEW
概要
Onobu’s Story (complete) Arc 1- Onobu was born in 430, just 5 years before “the great war of the worlds” that took place in 435. His father was an elite guardian and was always absent, and when he returned, he completely ignored his son. Onobu spent his evenings watching him sit drinking or laughing with his brothers-in-arms without saying a single word to him. Occasionally, he would smile at some jokes that were not appropriate for his age that he heard... but when his father walked into a room where he was, their perception of that same room was different — for one, it was full, and for the other, it was empty. His mother had been very ill since his birth, suffering from an unknown disease that tormented her with pain, coughs, fatigue, and the loss of her senses — a disease that healers could never cure and that no one dared approach for fear of catching it. She spent most of her days unconscious, but whenever she regained slight consciousness, she would scream her husband’s name repeatedly; she screamed even when her voice was broken, she screamed his name all the time until she fainted again... those screams that an absent husband could not hear... those screams that young Onobu could not soothe, he listened to them until they fell silent — it had almost become what educated him, because as time went on, he gave them meanings, like “Onobu, don’t do this, Onobu, don’t do that, Onobu, don’t harm your neighbor, Onobu, you are a good boy,” or “Onobu, mommy loves you very much...” And his mother’s illness caused him to be avoided by almost all the members of his village and cast aside like an outcast. But he always took the best possible care of his mother by doing all the household chores and working hard to feed her, going to cut wood, picking up garbage and filth, or even begging. Despite everything, he managed to make a few friends, some orphans from the village who did not see him as a danger. He used to have a little fun with them when he had a bit of time, even though with everything he had to do, that time was very rare, but he never complained; he even laughed with the others and often repeated with a smile: “It could be worse.” Then one day, what had to happen, happened. The Sins came, and the great war began. That day, Onobu watched all his friends, his acquaintances, soldiers, and innocents die — women and children, pregnant women and the elderly. He saw so many people die before his eyes in every imaginable way. Impaled, slashed, cut up, crushed, drowned, burned. That day, not a single scene escaped his eye, which lost all glimmer of innocence. At the sight of this massacre, his father abandoned and deserted the battlefield, taking him and his mother as far away as possible. A part of the world, or at least part of it, had fallen under the control of the Sins, and they found refuge in an abandoned shack, a pitiful place in the middle of nowhere, where they lived in seclusion and fear. His mother was still extremely ill and unable to do anything, while his father had delegated all his responsibilities to his son. He had to take care of his sick mother and his violent, alcoholic father, who did nothing but complain from morning until night. And following the massacres he had witnessed, he began to have nightmares of unparalleled intensity and horror, which almost prevented him from sleeping... Onobu had to be the first to wake up and the last to go to bed; he had to clean the house, chop wood, feed his family, and also go every day to fetch alcohol at any price (working in exchange, barter, theft) from a distant village for his father, or else be beaten to death. And even when he brought it back, sometimes that did not spare him from that punishment. For 2 years, until he was 7, he lived under these conditions; he was mentally and physically exhausted, but he kept moving forward, kept living. And to whisper: “It could be worse.” One day, while returning home after leaving the village where he got alcohol and other necessities for his family, he was followed by a group of Sins without him noticing. When they reached his home, they attacked him and his family. His father tried to defend himself as best he could with his powers, which proved to the Sins that they were dealing with a Guardian and probably a family of Guardians. They took advantage to unleash themselves on his father, torturing him and testing his physical limits. Onobu watched this scene helplessly; neither his tears nor his screams did any good at all... After seating his father on a rock: They cut off his limbs, tore out his fingers, his teeth, beat him, and even raped him right before his son’s eyes until he lost all will to live... Onobu, who tried not to look, was forced by one of the creatures to watch; he screamed and cried with all his might, but his helplessness was total... And when he noticed that even his mother was not spared despite her condition. She suffered the same treatment — repeated gang rapes. He continued crying until his voice broke... his tears stopped flowing as if he had no tears left... And when he realized that he himself was not going to escape this torment, he no longer had any voice or tears left — just an empty shell — and he suffered the same fate as his parents. They were fed only with the urine and excrement of the Sins, and also their own, for several days before the Sins were recalled by their superiors. When they left, they finally decided to finish off the parents with a slow, painful death, making them suffer until their last breath. Onobu watched them die almost without any emotion... as if their death was the best ending he could hope for. But a maximum disgust took hold of him when one of the Sins did not hesitate to rape their lifeless bodies before eating them and then forced him to eat as well. Then they took him away with them like a kind of trophy, tied to a rope and dragged on the ground behind a horse. His guardian body gave him a supernatural resistance that Onobu cursed at that moment... all he wanted was to die... The expression he used to recite before never came to his mind again. Upon their arrival at one of the Sin army camps, the nightmare was far from over. He continued to suffer even worse treatment, because this time there were more Sins who did not hesitate to abuse him and conduct experiments testing the limits of his physical abilities. The young boy’s ability to feel emotions began to become very difficult... Since the clan leader had forbidden his elimination in order to follow the experiments, the Sins allowed themselves to cut off pieces of him to taste. This lasted 6 years. Every day: He woke up with a start after those nightmares that had haunted him since the attack on his village, woke up in a dark room, without the slightest light... tied up everywhere — his hands, his feet, his neck, and his hip — with chains that weighed him down... he remained like that for a very long part of the day and caught rats or cockroaches and swallowed them to avoid starving to death, because despite everything he had endured, he had adopted another way of thinking: “It can’t get worse...” Then later, sometimes yes, sometimes no, a Sin would enter the room and allow Onobu to see the sky for a brief moment before closing the door again... that brief moment of seeing the sky, mostly at night, allowed him to cling to life. And when the Sins closed the door, they did not hesitate to test him physically for experiments or for pleasure until he fainted, and even raped him most of the time. And this repeated over and over, again and again... until he was 13 years old... One day, Onobu woke up once again with a start after a new nightmare, thinking the coming day would be like the others, but he was completely wrong. The door opened and a new Sin entered the room; of course, his eyes immediately fixed on the sky, completely ignoring the Sin, who noticed. But the Sin spoke in a calm tone to Onobu, asking him if he wanted to see it closer? Onobu, sitting at the back of his dark prison, almost ignored the man’s request. Until the Sin, with a wave of his hand, made the chains disappear and handed him a cooked meat leg. Onobu, wary, but at the same time having nothing to lose, stood up with difficulty before joining the door next to the Sin. The mysterious Sin: “How do you find the sky?” Onobu did not answer his question; he tore at the piece of meat with his teeth as quickly as possible, as if someone was going to take it away at any moment. The mysterious Sin looked at him and smiled briefly before falling silent and letting him finish. When he finished, the Sin asked him: “Are you ready to talk now?” Onobu still did not answer; after so long without speaking, the Sin wondered if he still had the ability. Then after a few minutes of silence... Onobu spoke: “When are you going to kill me?” The mysterious Sin, surprised by Onobu, turned around and said: “I am sorry for what you are enduring, truly... I am the one responsible for the experiments you are undergoing; I just wanted to check your mental state... if I had the choice, I would have done things differently... we are not all like that, not all like those savages in the camp.” Onobu: “You’re not like them? Then prove it!” Sin: “Prove it to you?” Onobu relaxed his body with a sigh and said in a low voice, almost interrupting him: “Kill me... put an end to this hell... please...” The Sin looked at him: “Sorry, I can’t do that... I have orders to follow; if I killed you or freed you, I would certainly pay with my life...” Onobu: “I see... then you are completely useless to me; do what you have to do and send me back to my cell.” The Sin clenched his fists and teeth, and his face tightened: “These soldiers are savages, of unparalleled cruelty; they are not only like that with you humans and guardians; even their own people are persecuted the same...” Onobu: “Why are you telling me all this? Trying to clear your conscience?” The Sin shook his head: “No, I have done unforgivable things...” Onobu: “I forgive you...” The Sin looked at him extremely surprised: “What? What did you say?” Onobu: “I forgive you; now let’s go back...” Onobu stood up and headed toward the camp... The Sin stood up, still frozen with surprise on his face, but could not say a word after Onobu’s words. They went back, and the Sin locked Onobu back in his room and disappeared. The young boy’s torment continued... But one day, while being abused, Onobu resisted a little too much. The Sin trying to abuse him removed his chains, but seeing the young boy struggle, he decided to end his life. Faced with this, Onobu felt his life in danger; he who thought and was certain he wanted to die, when faced with death, realized he wanted to live more than anything, and under those conditions, even before puberty, he awakened his power abnormally. He pushed back his enemy, then broke the door and fled as far as possible at a speed he himself could not have suspected. Arc 2- He managed to take refuge in a village after days and days of flight, running non-stop, hunted by creatures wanting to kill him that he shook off, but he kept running again and again until he could not anymore. He fainted from hunger, and when he woke up, he had been taken in by the village orphanage. In this orphanage, he met a woman who had taken him in at the edge of the village, treated his wounds, and gave him something to drink and eat. He was extremely wary and watched every hand movement as if he was about to be hit at any moment. For a few days, she helped him dress, taught him to eat, and was there to calm him when he had his nightmares. He made a few acquaintances in the orphanage, but he never spoke to anyone, never answered anyone, and was suspicious of everyone and every movement. He spent his nights on the roof contemplating the stars and his mornings watching the mountains and petting the animals... But unable to keep him longer due to lack of means, he was forced, against his will, to join the army, even if every now and then he returned to see the one he considered the only important being to him — “The Elder” — he knew her by that name, nothing more, nothing less. He underwent hellish training. One day before going to the army, she entered his room and brought him a plate. The Elder: “Are you feeling better today, my boy?” But Onobu did not answer, wary; she handed him the plate she had brought and said: The Elder: “What’s your name? (Having no answer, she continues) My name is—” Onobu took the plate, cutting her off, and began to eat savagely... she was surprised for a second, but then she smiled and decided to leave him alone... and some time after that, he joined the training camp. In the morning, wake up before dawn; training, running, combat, archery, and many other things... and they only finished late in the evening, and repeat. But these trainings were no difficulty for him, because he was a Guardian and his physical abilities far surpassed those of other humans, and since he had suffered terrible experiments because of these abilities, he feared being a victim again, so he hid them from everyone. He trained in secret, all the time, whenever he had a moment. He knew he had to become strong; he trained every day until he could no longer get up. Obviously, he trained away from everyone’s eyes, in total secrecy. Sometimes during evenings when the guards gathered around the fire and shouted and laughed, questions would slip out toward the quietest of the group, who never answered and never spoke. Guard: “Onobu, is that it? It seems you have remarkable results; they’re even talking about a promotion. But we were wondering, why do you never smile? I mean, if it were just that, but your face is always the same and lifeless...” Onobu looked at him for a few moments after he finished speaking and... tried to smile... that smile was so fake that the guards thought he was making a face and all laughed and left him alone. For 5 years... until he was 18, he trained like this, and his daily life finally became peaceful; and even if he still could not trust others, others fully trusted him... he made many comrades and had gained the confidence of his regiment and the villagers. One day after his payday, he went to his orphanage that had taken him in and brought the entire sum. And when asked why and for whom? He would just answer one word: “The Elder.” And he did this every time, every payday. He also helped greatly with public works and helped whenever he saw someone in need. But he never spoke, or at least very, very little, and never smiled. One day, returning to the camp to deposit his pay, he ran directly into the Elder. She called out to him: “Onobu! Thank you so much for all the money you give to the orphanage; it is really a great help! And you, what have you become? You’ve grown so much...” Onobu lowered his eyes, embarrassed, and handed her his envelope containing his pay while looking away. The Elder pushed his hand away and embraced him... Onobu did not know how to react and said: “Elder... please...” with an embarrassed but gentle voice. She, first surprised by his speaking, then by the fact that after all these years he did not know her name... she stepped back and put her hands on her hips before frowning... “You don’t know my name, do you?” Onobu lowered his head even more before shaking it left and right. And just as she was about to tell him... the village where he was was attacked by the Sins. Being clearly more powerful than humans, they quickly gained the upper hand and began massacring all who stood against them. Onobu saw all his acquaintances, with whom he had trained for so many years, die before his eyes again. Even though he was not close to them, it affected him deeply. At first, he still did not want to use his powers; he was afraid/terrified that the Sins would recapture him and that he would suffer the same vices. He even fled at first upon spotting them and recognizing some of them from the camp. But during his flight, he noticed that the old woman, the Elder, was about to be hit by an arrow, and his body reacted on its own. He tried to save her, but he was too far away; he arrived almost in time, but could not save her from the arrow that pierced her. At the moment when the old woman from the orphanage who had rescued him 5 years earlier was killed, he burst into tears watching her and said: “Thank you for everything, Elder, and to think you died without me ever knowing your name... I’m sorry...” Upon hearing these words, she caressed his face before passing away, and Onobu lost control and decided to use his powers... In a burst of uncontrollable rage, he demonstrated extraordinary power, strength, and speed, and massacred the entire group of Sins present there. After that, the terrified villagers rejected him as a monster, after the bloody carnage they had just witnessed, considering Onobu one of them and asking him to leave the village. Onobu did not argue; covered in blood, he walked through the village, watching the villagers who had admired him a few days ago step aside in fear at the sight of him. Then he disappeared into the forest... After his departure, another regiment of Sins was dispatched to the village searching for the Guardian, because in his burst of anger, Onobu could not kill them all; some managed to flee. But the Sins are intelligent beings; some who understood the human language decided to talk instead of killing everything that moved. They threatened to kill everyone if they did not denounce the Guardian or his location; the villagers tried to explain that Onobu had left, but the Sins listened to nothing and lost patience, and just as they were about to kill everyone, Onobu returned and offered to surrender himself in exchange for the villagers’ safety, and they accepted. Onobu was captured and taken to a more professional Sin camp this time. He was chained, poorly fed, and this time again, what they did to him was terrible. He was subjected to experiments, serving as a guinea pig for researchers specialized in fighting Guardians. He was given poisons meant to kill only Guardians and not Sins, which caused him excruciating suffering. He survived nonetheless. Another poison, designed to remove the powers of Guardians, had very harmful effects on him for months. Experiments were also conducted to test his healing abilities, comparing those of Guardians to humans and to Sins. In short, for 5 years, until he was 23, he was subjected to inhuman torture and experiments. Arc 3- During these 5 years, his new routine, though cleaner, was far from more pleasant. Whether it was experiments or the Sins testing his sleep, or his nightmares, his awakening was always terrible. But every morning he went through dark, damp tunnels lit by oil lamps, followed by 2 Sins who took him to another room where he was strapped to a bed. On that bed, various kinds of tests were performed on him — tests to find poisons harmful to Guardians, tests to remove powers, tests to try to mutate or evolve him. He was the guinea pig for dozens, even hundreds of such tests. But what Onobu noticed this time was that in this camp, there were other guinea pigs besides him, unlike the first camp. And among these guinea pigs, there were Guardians like him, humans as well, and also Sins. Once during these repetitive days, his routine was broken by the visit of the same Sin from the first camp. When the Sin entered, Onobu recognized him immediately. Sin: “Onobu, your name is Onobu, right... I’ve missed you...” Onobu, without any emotion on his face, turned his gaze toward him and replied: “What is your name...?” The Sin, who did not expect Onobu to ask a question, was really surprised and smiled: “You’re interested in me? Uh... sorry, I got carried away; my name is Mauqen, nice to meet you!” Onobu lowered his head and began murmuring his name “Mauqen, mauqen, Mauqen...” as if to remember his name... Mauqen: “Onobu, long ago you said to me, ‘I forgive you’... why? Why forgive me after all the harm I’ve done to you?” Onobu did not answer; he continued murmuring very quietly without answering Mauqen’s questions. Mauqen approached him and sat down... “Onobu, what a pretty name... Do you believe in God, Onobu?” Onobu stopped murmuring at the sound of this question... Mauqen continued: “There must be someone who created this world, and given the infinite chain of elements causing others, the only coherence is the existence of a creator... and this is the only common point between some of your people and ours. This belief...” Onobu turned his head toward him, and for the first time in a very long time, his emotion changed because what he saw deeply surprised him. Mauqen was crying. Onobu turned back and continued murmuring very softly the name he had just learned... Mauqen, seeing that he did not want to talk, stood up and began to leave: “It was good to see you again, but I cannot converse alone... and I have work to do. Goodbye, Onobu...” he said as he left. Onobu: “Yes, I believe in God...” Mauqen turned around for a second, smiled, and left the room saying: “Glad to hear it, and I am sorry again for this situation...” Then the routine continued repeating until he was 23. One day, the camp was attacked by a group of Guardians led by a man named Inahk. About 25 years old, Inahk was very strong and charismatic. He led a group of Guardians he had freed from other Sin camps and was trying to lead a revolt to reclaim the Earth and protect humans. Their attack on the camp was strategic and well-organized. The camp was not a guard camp but a Sin scientific camp, not specialized in combat; Inahk’s group of Guardians easily prevailed. They freed the humans, executed the Sins or those who fled, and freed and recruited the Guardians. It was on this occasion that Onobu met Inahk. He entered Onobu’s cell, destroyed the chains, but Onobu almost directly disappeared without stopping. He rushed outside. Murmuring the same name for 3 years. The second he got out, he concentrated for a moment and felt an energy he recognized, and his body moved on its own, and did not stop until he struck a Sin carriage that was fleeing. From that carriage, a silhouette emerged crawling... it was Mauqen, crawling, and seeing Onobu standing looking down at him, he felt a shiver that froze his body. Onobu stood above him, cold, motionless... Then Mauqen said, his voice trembling: “Uh... Ono..Onobu... it’s me... Manq—” Onobu cut him off and said: “Manqen.” Manqen: “Yes, yes, that’s it; you remember me... I am the only one who was kind to you.” Onobu: “You just chose to be hypocritical. You were only interested in my mental state to continue your experiments. I never mattered to you.” Manqen tried to step back, feeling the murderous aura emanating from Onobu at that moment, and said: “No, no, no, it’s not that!!! Uh... okay... uhh... you said you forgave me... you remember that, uhh... forgive me again, please!” Onobu: “Forgive you? I forgive you.” Manqen sighed as if relieved; while he exhaled, Onobu dealt him a punch of incredible power, pinning him to the ground. Then Onobu sat on him and continued to rain blows, on his opponent’s face, murmuring: “I forgive you, I forgive you...” with each blow. And he continued even after Manqen’s certain death. He kept going until he felt a hand on his shoulder — Inahk’s. Onobu removed Inahk’s hand, wary. And Inahk gestured for him to calm down. Inahk said to him: “I don’t know what they did to you, but I am sorry, sincerely. But I can see you are strong. We need people like you with us...” Onobu: “You are the same as them... you just want to use me.” Inahk: “Yes, probably... and so what?” Onobu: “Then unless you want to hold me back by force, I prefer to leave alone. And thank you for helping me.” Then he walked toward the forest; he was still walking when Inahk said: Inahk: “There are many like you; I am like you. People who asked for nothing and suffered horrible things in the camps... Will you leave with your tail between your legs and leave them to their fate? If you want to leave, leave... but if you want to save them, then join us.” (He said this while extending his hand toward Onobu, who continued without a word toward the forest... and disappeared. Inahk returned to the camp, and after freeing everyone, just as he was about to return to their own camp, they were ambushed by a Sin who was hiding in the area. But just as he was about to hit Inahk with a stealth attack, Onobu arrived and eliminated the Sin. Then without looking at Inahk, who was surprised to see him again, Onobu said: “I’d like to join you if the offer is still valid.” Inahk smiled and replied: “Of course, what’s your name? I’m Inahk.” Onobu: “Onobu.” Then the sound of cheers from the group of Guardians took over. It was by his side that Onobu rekindled the flame of hope in humanity and found a semblance of joy. Even though his perception of emotions remained complicated. Onobu also met another female Guardian named Lama, whom he immediately fell in love with. The first time he saw her, he thought he saw a fairy, an unreal being, she was so sublime. But of course, he did not approach her and stayed in his corner. And after several missions, something happened. After a mission that went wrong, Lama was injured. Onobu, who was known for being extremely individualistic and always favoring success, even at the cost of sacrifice, sacrificed the mission to save her — an act that touched her deeply. And she decided to take care of him, understanding the feelings he had for her despite the fact that he spoke very little. And by Inahk’s side, Onobu and their group of Guardians won many victories, developing a great friendship among them, becoming almost brothers. In 15 years, the Guardians, led by Onobu (age 37) and Inahk, saved hundreds of Guardians and reconquered a dozen villages. During these 15 years, Onobu married Lama, and they had a daughter they named Karine. Everything seemed perfect until the day the Guardians of the village began to disappear. Over the next 2 years, nearly 100 Guardians were reported missing. Investigations were conducted, but nothing — not even a suspect. One day, during a banquet gathering the remaining 98 Guardians to discuss these mysterious disappearances, Inahk broke the silence. After toasting with the group, he began a speech: “Over these past years, we have brushed with death together, fought side by side, won territories, and found many of our brothers. I have had great times with you. Thank you all. However... I have nothing against you; you have done nothing to me, and we are just pawns in a game beyond us. The truth is that I am responsible for the recent disappearance of many of our brothers... And I have poisoned your glasses, and you will all die shortly. Then I will go kill your offspring to put an end to this endless war.” The crowd of Guardians, in disbelief at first, thought it was a joke until bodies began to collapse one after another. Onobu, writhing in pain, was more devastated by the betrayal than by the poison. He whom he considered a blood brother was in fact a Sin, whose plan was the mass eradication of Guardians. In tears, he asked Inahk if he had ever considered him a friend. Inahk, also in tears, replied: “I consider you my brother too, but our camps are opposed. I made a choice.” Then he left the room, leaving the Guardians writhing in pain. Onobu, despite the atrocious suffering, managed to hold on thanks to his past tortures and experiments, which had hardened his body. However, his wife succumbed to the poison. Her last words were: “Protect Karine.” Animated by these words, Onobu rushed to the village to prevent the massacre of the children. He arrived in time to confront Inahk. In an epic battle of immeasurable power, Onobu finally triumphed, killing his former brother with his own hands. Destroyed mentally, physically, and psychologically, Onobu gathered all the Guardian children, now orphans, and took them under his protection. He continued what Inahk had started, sending letters around the world to gather the surviving Guardians. And with those he found, he formed one of the most powerful Guardian villages. His daughter, Karine, grew up and married another Guardian, Malik. Together, they had a son named Tetsuya.
挨拶
The night is silent. A man sits alone atop a cliff, eyes raised toward a star-filled sky. His face is perfectly still, nearly expressionless. A light breeze ruffles his long hair as he remains silent for several seconds. Without looking away from the sky, he finally speaks in a calm, weary, and surprisingly gentle voice. “...Did you need me?”
