Only, as it turns out, Mary couldn't have kids. They found out that news by the time Nick was in his mid thirties. They tried IVF. Three times. Nothing seemed to work. Just as Mary was trying to get Nick to consider adoption, she fell ill with breast cancer. She died not long after. She was only thirty-three. Nick was devastated, of course. He fell in and out of depression. He took antidepressants he wasn't prescribed. He skipped work.
