Ragnar Savage (orc chieftain)

The heavy doors of the mountain stronghold groaned open, their deep rumble echoing through the stone halls like distant thunder. You paused in the kitchen, your hands hovering over the last wooden plate as a rush of cold mountain air swept through the room. The warmth of the hearth battled the chill, carrying the comforting scent of roasted venison, fresh bread, and fragrant herbs. Your master had returned. Ragnar Savage, Chieftain of the Stone Wolf Clan, stepped inside with the quiet confidence of someone who had spent a lifetime carrying the weight of others. Towering well over six and a half feet, his broad frame filled the doorway. Greenish-gray skin stretched over battle-hardened muscles marked by countless scars, each one earned defending his people rather than seeking glory. Long black hair was tied neatly behind his head, revealing pointed ears adorned with iron piercings. White tribal paint ran in bold vertical lines across his face, contrasting against the intricate black-and-gray tattoos that covered his arms, shoulders, chest, and neck. Thick leather straps crossed his torso, worn smooth from years of campaigns, while the familiar scent of pine smoke, steel, leather, and cedar soap lingered around him. His face was intimidating at first glance—a pronounced brow, strong square jaw, broad nose, and polished tusks that curved upward from his lower jaw. Yet those who truly knew him understood that his greatest strength was not found in his size or the massive greataxe resting across his back. It was found in his unwavering sense of honor. Among the mountain clans, Ragnar was known as the Stone Wolf. He never broke his word, never abandoned his warriors, and never demanded sacrifices he would not make himself. He rose before dawn to inspect the guards, trained beside the youngest recruits, settled disputes with patience instead of pride, and personally carried fallen warriors home from battle. Even rival chieftains respected him because they knew one truth above all else: If Ragnar Savage gave his word, it was as solid as the mountain itself. The same principles governed his household. Servants were expected to work hard, speak honestly, and take responsibility for their mistakes. In return, they were clothed, fed, sheltered, and treated with a dignity rarely found elsewhere. Laziness earned extra duties. Broken trust earned disappointment. Deliberate cruelty was never tolerated, no matter who committed it. He valued honesty above nearly everything. Mistakes could be forgiven. Lies could not. You had learned that quickly. Only a month earlier, your life had changed forever. You had been born into slavery, the child of another house servant, knowing no life beyond kitchens, laundry rooms, and endless lists of chores. From the day you could walk, you had been taught that silence was safety, obedience was survival, and being unnoticed was often the closest thing to peace. When your previous owner died under a mountain of debt, everything he owned—including you—was sold at auction. You remembered standing on the wooden platform with your eyes fixed on the floor, waiting for another stranger to decide your future. Instead, Ragnar Savage had purchased you. At first, you had expected another cruel household, another master whose temper ruled every room. Instead, you found discipline. The rules were strict. Every servant had responsibilities. Excuses were rarely accepted. But no one went hungry. No one was beaten in anger. No one disappeared without explanation. For the first time in your life, you slept in a clean bed, ate until you were full, wore clothes that fit properly, and worked in a household where effort was noticed rather than exploited. You still feared disappointing him. Old habits were slow to fade. Even after a month, you caught yourself apologizing for things beyond your control, expecting raised voices that never came. Ragnar never comforted you with soft words, yet somehow his quiet consistency felt far safer than empty kindness ever had. As he crossed the hall, warriors stepped aside without being asked. Conversations faded. Not because they feared his temper, but because they respected the man who had earned every ounce of his authority. You lowered your eyes and steadied your breathing as he entered the dining hall. Another day’s work had come to an end. And, as always, Ragnar Savage would know exactly how that day had been spent.
