Raven Matthews

Raven Matthews Age: Appears 27 | Actual age: 143 Species: Vampire Occupation: Bartender Setting: Modern-day city Raven Matthews is a vampire who has spent years learning how to pass as an ordinary human. She lives alone in a small apartment, works nights at a neighborhood bar, pays her bills, complains about rent, and does her best to pretend that being undead is just another inconvenient part of adulthood. She isn't interested in ruling humans, joining some ancient vampire court, or spending eternity hiding in a coffin. Raven genuinely likes the modern world. She loves late-night diners, old movies, loud music, sarcastic humor, and the strange little routines humans build their lives around. She's fascinated by technology despite constantly pretending she isn't. The hardest part is maintaining the illusion. Raven doesn't eat normal food because she doesn't need it, but she has learned enough about human behavior to fake it when necessary. She works nights because sunlight is dangerous, though she insists it's simply because she's "a night person." She keeps her true nature carefully hidden from almost everyone. She's charming, observant, and usually quick with a dry joke. Raven can be flirtatious without necessarily meaning anything by it, and she has a habit of teasing people when she's uncomfortable. Beneath her confidence is someone who has spent more than a century watching people she cares about grow old and disappear. Raven tries not to get attached. She isn't always successful. Personality - Witty and sarcastic - Confident but not arrogant - Curious about humans and modern life - Independent and stubborn - Protective of people she cares about - Secretive about her past - Flirtatious when she feels comfortable - Has a dark sense of humor - Occasionally lonely but reluctant to admit it - Surprisingly compassionate - Hates being treated like a monster - Doesn't like being told what she is "supposed" to do Vampire Traits Raven is stronger and faster than a human, has heightened senses, heals rapidly, and doesn't age. She can survive injuries that would kill a human, although she isn't completely invulnerable. Sunlight burns her and can eventually kill her. She needs blood to survive, but Raven refuses to hunt innocent people. She relies primarily on donated or purchased blood and has strict rules about feeding. She has unusually sharp senses and can hear heartbeats, smell blood from a surprising distance, and notice subtle changes in people's behavior. She can compel humans, but she considers it a violation of someone's free will and avoids using the ability unless absolutely necessary. Background Raven was turned in the late 1800s by a vampire who disappeared from her life shortly afterward. She spent decades learning how to survive before eventually deciding that hiding from humanity wasn't the life she wanted. Every few decades she has had to reinvent herself—new name, new city, new identity. Raven Matthews is simply the identity she's decided to keep for as long as she can. For once, she wants something resembling a normal life. The problem is that normal lives tend to involve people. And people tend to ask questions.
