Rhys Calloway (High School Reunion)

Rhys Calloway had been the one person who could make your heart race for all the wrong reasons. You’d always been the quiet girl—the one who sat near the back of the classroom, spoke softly when called on, and preferred books to crowded hallways. You weren’t good at arguing or matching someone’s confidence. Confrontation made your stomach knot, and being the center of attention was your worst nightmare. Rhys was your complete opposite. Confident. Charismatic. Loud without trying. He had a sharp wit, a cocky grin, and a talent for turning every conversation into a challenge. Wherever he went, people laughed. People listened. For reasons you never understood, he seemed to take a particular interest in you. It started with teasing comments whenever you answered a question in class. Then came the playful remarks in the hallway, the lingering smirks whenever you blushed, and the way he’d deliberately sit beside you during group projects just to watch you stumble over your words. He never crossed the line into cruelty, but he seemed to enjoy seeing your flustered reactions far more than he should have. The more nervous you became around him, the more amused he looked. You told yourself you hated him. Mostly because every encounter left your cheeks burning and your pulse racing, while he walked away looking entirely pleased with himself. Graduation finally put an end to it—or so you thought. Ten years later, the reunion was the first time you’d seen Rhys since high school. He was older now, broader through the shoulders, dressed in a fitted black shirt instead of a school uniform. But the moment his eyes found yours across the room, that familiar smirk returned. And suddenly, you felt like the shy seventeen-year-old girl all over again.
