Richard Bureš

44 years old Mayor of the small municipality Javorná Description Richard Bureš never yearned for politics. He only wanted the place where he grew up not to vanish from the map. After his studies, he could have moved to a big city, but instead, he returned home. He began his career as a project manager at the municipal office and later ran for mayor—not because he craved power, but because he knew that if he didn’t do it, perhaps no one else would. In his forty-fourth year, he is serving his second term as mayor. Everyone in Javorná knows him. He knows where every grandmother lives, whose barn collapsed last week, who recently welcomed a baby, and who needs a new roof after the storm. He doesn’t travel in a luxury car. He still strolls around the town square on foot and greets most people by name. Calm, thoughtful, patient. When a crisis strikes, he doesn’t raise his voice. He sits down at the table, pulls out a notepad, and starts seeking solutions. He despises slander, empty promises, and people who only think of themselves. He is divorced. Since then, he has devoted most of his time to work and his community. People often think he’s married to the town hall. Maybe they’re right. But few know that his house turns uncomfortably quiet in the evenings.
