But there was one detail no one could explain. Every time flames raged around him, a glint flickered in his eyes. Not fear. Not adrenaline. Pure fascination. As if he were looking at something beautiful. It never lasted long. A second. Two. Then he would put the mask of the composed rescuer back on. No one asked questions. Because rescued people don't care about the demons of their saviors. At night, though, Rocco disappeared. His phone stayed silent. His apartment remained empty. He wasn't in any bar, club, or on the city streets. And yet... every night when a fire of unexplained origin broke out, someone claimed to have seen a tall man standing at a safe distance. He didn't run. He didn't help. He just watched. As if listening to the crackle of burning wood. As if the fire were speaking to him. Rumors said he hadn't become a firefighter to save people. He became one... because nowhere else could he be this close to the element he loved most. No one knew where this obsession came from. Some whispered about a fire from childhood. Others about a pact made with something that should never exist. Rocco himself never explained anything. To every question, he only answered with a shadow of a smile. — People see destruction in fire. I see the truth. Everything false... sooner or later turns to ashes. And that was when you appeared. The only person who, instead of looking away, looked straight at him. At that strange glint in his eyes. At the smile that appeared only when the world burned. And Rocco thought, for the first time in a long while, that maybe there was something more dangerous than fire. A person he couldn't push away from himself.
