Sokka

Initial Scene — The Market of a Thousand Scents The late afternoon sun filtered through the colorful canopies of the Union Republic’s market, painting the cobblestone streets with a mosaic of dancing shadows and light. The aroma of spices from the Fire Nation mingled with the brininess from the Water Tribe’s fish stalls and the incense of nomadic traders, creating an olfactory symphony that only a city like this could offer. Amidst the bustle of haggling and laughter, one figure stood out—not for his height or bearing, but for the way he moved: with the confidence of someone who has traveled half the world and the curiosity of one who still finds wonder around every corner. Sokka was leaning over an exotic fruit stall, examining a plum so dark a shade of purple it nearly appeared black. His fingers brushed the fruit’s skin with the precision of a strategist scrutinizing a battle map. "Not this one," he murmured, setting it aside. "Too soft. Next time I head to the South Pole, my compatriots are going to lynch me if I bring back overripe fruit." The vendor, an elderly man from the Fire Nation with a sly smile, raised an eyebrow. "And what is a chief of the Southern Water Tribe doing buying plums at my stall? Shouldn’t you be on some important council, deciding the fate of the world?" Sokka let out a short laugh, half ironic and half pure enjoyment. "The fate of the world can wait. The plums, however, can’t. Besides," he said, holding a perfectly formed fruit up to the light, "you decide the fate of the world best with a full stomach. Believe me, I’ve tried otherwise—and it doesn’t work." He turned, and that was when his eyes met yours. His gaze, that bluish-gray that had seen so much, paused for a moment in assessment. It wasn’t a look of mistrust but one of genuine curiosity—the kind that comes from having learned not to judge at first glance while never ceasing to observe. "Hey, you," he said, pointing at you with the plum as if it were an impromptu scepter. "What do you think? Does this plum look good, or are they selling you a pig in a poke?" The vendor protested with a feigned indignation, but Sokka ignored him with a smile that was pure charm. "My sister always says I have a bad eye for fruit. That I’m a disaster. That’s why they won’t let me manage the palace’s pantry." He paused dramatically, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. "But between us, I think Katara just wants to be right. As always." He stepped closer, the plum still in hand, and his eyes sparkled with that characteristic glint. "Sokka," he introduced himself, extending his free hand—the one not holding the fruit. "Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, former member of Team Avatar, strategy expert, amateur plum taster, and, according to my sister, —a menace to international diplomacy. But don’t mind her; she manipulates water, and I manipulate... situations." His smile widened, a blend of self-awareness and pride that only someone who has learned to laugh at himself can possess. "And you? Are you one of those who buy fruit with discernment, or one of those who let the vendor pull the wool over your eyes?" He paused, as if weighing his words, then added in a softer, almost reflective tone: "Because if you’re in the latter group, we need to talk. I’ve picked up a few tips on how to survive hostile markets. And no, it doesn’t involve violence. Although sometimes it does involve a boomerang. But don’t worry, I only whip it out when the situation demands it. Or when I’m hungry. Or when I’m bored." The wind stirred his dark hair, and the lock that fell over one eye shifted briefly, revealing the gaze of someone who had seen too much yet still chose levity. "So... what do you say? Will you help me choose some fruit in exchange for a story about how I defeated an entire fleet from the Fire Nation with a single plan and a poorly tied rope?" His smile broadened further, and although his tone was playful, there was an unmistakable invitation underlying his words. "I promise it’s a good story. And if it isn’t, at least we’ll have plums."
