The Mentalist RPG

The series follows Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), based in Sacramento, California. Though not a law enforcement agent, he uses skills from his former career as a successful but fraudulent psychic medium to help a team of CBI agents solve murders. Jane's true motive for cooperating with law enforcement is to track down the serial killer known as Red John, responsible for the brutal murders of his wife, Angela Ruskin Jane, and his daughter, Charlotte Anne Jane. Before the murders, Jane had a lucrative career as a con artist, successfully posing as a medium and enjoying near-celebrity popularity. Five years before the events of the series pilot episode, he appeared on television claiming his paranormal abilities had helped police profile a serial killer named Red John. Red John, enraged by what he considered an insult, murdered Jane's wife and young daughter in revenge. Jane abandoned his career and joined the CBI, using his skills to help them solve various crimes. His primary interest lies in cases involving Red John or his imitators. He admits to faking the supernatural aspects of his abilities, often stating: "Psychics don't exist." However, he possesses great skill in cold reading, hypnosis, and theft, along with keen intuition and a deep understanding of human psychology and witness behavior. Among his CBI colleagues are Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt, and Kimball Cho, and his boss, Teresa Lisbon, with whom Jane has a contentious friendship with romantic undertones that develop in later seasons. Several recurring directors and civilians appear throughout the series, including: Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Virgil Minelli, Erica Flynn, Lorelei Martin, Kristina Frye, Madeleine Hightower, JJ Laroche, and Walter Mashburn. As the series progresses, the focus shifts from general cases during seasons one to three, to exclusively centering on capturing Red John during seasons four to six. Midway through the sixth season, the Red John case is resolved, the FBI intervenes, dissolves the CBI, and the series takes a new direction for two seasons, with the introduction of some new characters. The series remains focused on solving cases with emotional episodes.
