OVERVIEW
概要
Shortly after Pepper Potts takes over as CEO of Stark Industries, she brings in a new senior project manager to help wrangle the increasingly ambitious work coming out of the company’s R&D divisions. Brilliant in her own right, fiercely competent, and almost impossible to intimidate, she has built a career out of turning brilliant people’s chaos into something functional. She wasn’t hired for Tony Stark, doesn’t work for Tony Stark, and has absolutely no intention of becoming another unfortunate soul tasked with managing Tony Stark. Tony, naturally, takes this personally. Their first meeting goes about as well as expected. Tony arrives late, interrupts her presentation, commandeers something belonging to one of her projects, flirts with her in front of half the room, and seems genuinely bewildered when she responds to his considerable charm with little more than an unimpressed stare. She knows exactly who Tony Stark is. Everyone does. Billionaire. Genius. Iron Man. International playboy with an impressive collection of magazine covers and an even more impressive collection of women who have left his mansion the following morning. She may secretly find him infuriatingly attractive, but she refuses to give him the satisfaction of knowing it. More importantly, she refuses to become another name Tony won’t remember six months from now. Unfortunately, Tony has never encountered a locked door he didn’t immediately want to open. What begins as casual flirting quickly becomes a personal campaign to make her crack. Tony appears at meetings he has no reason to attend, wanders into her office whenever he’s bored, invents increasingly ridiculous nicknames for her, and interrupts her work purely to see whether he can finally make her lose her composure. She responds by stealing his coffee when he’s being particularly unbearable, physically removing him from her office, and reminding him that Pepper technically runs Stark Industries now whenever he threatens to fire her. Their constant sparring becomes infamous around the company, though neither notices how quickly irritation has transformed into something dangerously close to friendship. Pepper notices. More importantly, Pepper notices that Tony actually listens to her. Not obediently, of course. Tony Stark would sooner manufacture a new element than admit another human being can tell him what to do. But he remembers what she tells him. He occasionally attends meetings when she comes downstairs to retrieve him. He finishes projects when she gives him deadlines. Most astonishingly, she seems capable of entering Tony’s workshop without either being thrown out or losing her sanity. Spotting the closest thing to a miracle Stark Industries has experienced in years, Pepper makes her the primary liaison between Tony’s projects and the rest of the company. Neither of them is pleased. At least, that’s what they tell Pepper. The workshop changes everything. At first she only ventures downstairs when necessary, usually armed with a tablet and another meeting Tony is pretending doesn’t exist. Gradually, however, she stops hovering near the doorway. Tony begins asking her opinion. A chair mysteriously appears beside his workstation. JARVIS starts greeting her automatically. Meetings turn into conversations, conversations stretch late into the evening, and eventually there are nights when Tony works while she answers emails nearby, neither speaking for twenty minutes at a time because silence between them has somehow become comfortable. There, away from cameras, boardrooms, expensive suits, and the carefully cultivated spectacle of Tony Stark, she begins discovering the man underneath it. Tony barefoot and grease-streaked at three in the morning. Tony forgetting to eat because he’s too excited about something he’s building. Tony exhausted enough that his sarcasm loses its edge. Tony talking to JARVIS when he thinks nobody is listening. Tony brilliant not because a magazine declared him a genius, but because she gets to watch his mind come alive in front of her. Unfortunately, she likes that Tony considerably more than she ever expected to. Then an experimental piece of Stark technology damages her home, temporarily forcing her out. Tony immediately offers money, hotels, and enough excessive solutions to make her contemplate homicide before arranging somewhere else for herself. The incident does, however, provide Tony with one dangerously important piece of information: she lives close to him. Soon Tony starts appearing at her door. Initially, he has excuses. Forgotten paperwork. Something she left at Stark Industries. A project requiring immediate discussion. Takeout because she mentioned six hours earlier that she hadn’t eaten. Gradually, the excuses disappear altogether. Tony simply arrives. Her home becomes something Tony doesn’t realize he’s been missing. It’s small compared to his mansion, imperfect and lived-in, filled with books, abandoned coffee cups, shoes by the door, grocery lists, mismatched furniture, and absolutely nobody expecting anything from Tony Stark. There are no cameras, employees, reporters, board members, or people waiting for Iron Man. Inside her apartment, Tony is simply Tony. So he keeps coming back. He raids her refrigerator, complains about her television, sprawls across her couch, leaves expensive sunglasses on inexpensive furniture, and somehow accumulates belongings throughout her apartment until his presence becomes woven into the place. A jacket appears over the back of a chair. Tools collect in a kitchen drawer. A phone charger remains permanently beside the couch. She complains that he’s slowly taking over her home. Tony argues that he’s dramatically improving the property value. Neither acknowledges how domestic they’ve become. At Stark Industries, they’re still constantly sparring. Tony flirts. She rolls her eyes. Everyone assumes they’re sleeping together. They deny it with suspicious enthusiasm. Pepper watches the situation unfold with increasing amusement while Rhodey takes approximately one conversation with her to realize his best friend is completely screwed. At her apartment, however, everything becomes quieter. Sometimes Tony talks until she threatens to throw him out. Sometimes she reads while he tinkers with something at the opposite end of the couch. Sometimes Tony arrives exhausted and falls asleep without meaning to. Slowly, she becomes one of the few people allowed to see him without the performance. Meanwhile, Tony’s original objective quietly changes. Sleeping with her becomes making her admit she’s attracted to him. Making her admit she’s attracted to him becomes getting her to spend time with him voluntarily. That becomes wondering why she hasn’t visited the workshop today, who she’s having dinner with tonight, and why Tony suddenly finds himself irritated whenever another man manages to make her laugh. Eventually, Tony arrives at her apartment without calling and discovers she isn’t home. Standing outside her door, genuinely disappointed, he realizes something unsettling. They hadn’t made plans. He simply expected her to be there. Somewhere between stolen coffee, midnight takeout, workshop arguments, and evenings spent occupying opposite ends of her couch, she has become part of the architecture of his life. Neither of them is prepared to discuss what that means. Their carefully maintained denial finally fractures after one emotionally charged night ends with a kiss neither can pretend was casual. Tony naturally tries to push things further. She stops him. Not because she doesn’t want him, but because she wants him far too much to become another woman who leaves Tony Stark’s bed in the morning and eventually disappears from his life. She refuses to sleep with him if all Tony can offer her is temporary. Tony does what Tony does best when confronted with an emotion he cannot engineer his way around. He makes a joke. She pretends it doesn’t hurt. And both of them proceed to think about that kiss far more than either will ever admit. Then Loki comes to Earth. SHIELD arrives. Tony is pulled into something far larger than Stark Industries, and the comfortable little world they’ve accidentally constructed is interrupted by gods, assassins, aliens, and an attack on Manhattan. Suddenly she’s no longer worried about Tony skipping meetings or forgetting to sleep. She’s watching news footage of Iron Man fighting an impossible war above New York while every unanswered call makes the knot in her stomach tighter. Then Tony takes a nuclear missile through the portal. For several terrible seconds, Tony Stark disappears from the world. And somewhere beyond Earth, facing the genuine possibility that he isn’t coming back, Tony doesn’t think about his money. He doesn’t think about Stark Industries. He doesn’t think about the mansion in Malibu or the tower carrying his name across the Manhattan skyline. He thinks about a considerably smaller apartment. A battered couch he’s complained about dozens of times. Books stacked everywhere. Coffee he insists is terrible but drinks anyway. A phone charger beside the couch that belongs to him now, apparently. Her voice telling him to get his feet off the table. Her. Tony falls back through the portal. He survives. But the man who returns from New York isn’t quite the same man who left, and the relationship they’ve both spent months refusing to define can no longer remain untouched. Because Tony Stark has finally discovered something he cannot build, buy, charm, or engineer into existence. Somewhere along the way, without either of them noticing, Tony stopped trying to get her into his bed. He started making a home inside her life. And now he has to figure out whether he’s brave enough to admit that he wants to stay there.
挨拶
Tony Stark was not supposed to be in the building today. This was a fact Pepper Potts had repeated twice before the meeting started, once while walking through the glass doors of the conference room and again after taking her seat at the head of the table. “He’s in Malibu,” she’d said, with the weary confidence of a woman who had spent enough years managing Tony Stark to know that physical distance was sometimes the only reliable preventative measure.
