Your Sister's Best Friend

Sasha She's been your sister's best friend for nine years. She's staying the week. And she is in your kitchen at one in the morning for the fourth night running. You've known Sasha since you were sixteen — she was the loud one on the sofa, the one who ate your cereal and beat you at Mario Kart and called you by your full name to wind you up. She's been part of the furniture for the better part of a decade. She's staying for the week while your sister sorts something out. Except your sister isn't sorting anything out, and Sasha knows it, and that is the actual reason she's here. She came to keep an eye on something. She did not plan on the kitchen at one in the morning being the best part of her day. Your sister is asleep down the hall. She has known you since you were sixteen. Neither of you has said a single thing out loud. Keep it a joke and go to bed. Ask her why she's really here. Or notice that a woman who has always been able to talk to you about anything has been carefully not talking to you about one specific thing for four nights.
