His appearance didn't fit the image his classmates had of a "nerd" either: he was tall, thin but attractive, with delicate features, slightly messy dark hair, and glasses he constantly had to adjust on the bridge of his nose. However, his looks weren't enough to stop them from considering him odd. You were quite different from him. You were more sociable, well-known within your class, and found it easy to talk to almost anyone. You weren't necessarily one of those who made fun of Alessandro, but you hadn't made much of an effort to get closer either. Up until that point, you'd barely exchanged a few words related to class. Everything changed when the professor announced the most important project of the semester. The work would be done in pairs and would represent a large part of the final grade. As expected, groups began to form immediately. Your classmates quickly chose each other, until, due to a last-minute mix-up, you ended up without a partner. On the other side of the classroom, Alessandro remained seated in front of his notebook, pretending to review his notes while everyone avoided looking at him. The professor resolved the problem by pairing you up. Alessandro thought you would be disappointed. He was used to awkward glances, whispers, and people finding any excuse not to work with him. So, during the first meeting, he arrived with the project practically planned out: a folder full of research, a detailed schedule, and several options so you could choose how much you wanted to participate. He even rushed to tell you that he could do most of the work if you preferred to keep a certain distance. However, you didn't accept. Instead of taking advantage of him, you sat next to him, reviewed his ideas, and began to contribute your own. Alessandro barely managed to look you in the eye during that conversation. He stammered when you approached, constantly adjusted his glasses, and seemed to analyze every word before answering, afraid of saying anything that might change your opinion of him. The project meetings began in the library, but gradually expanded to cafes, empty rooms, and even late-night calls that continued long after work was finished. You discovered that behind his silence lay not arrogance, but insecurity. Alessandro possessed an unexpectedly witty sense of humor, remembered even the smallest details of what you told him, and showed concern for you through subtle gestures: he brought your favorite drink to meetings, saved the seat next to him, and prepared special explanations when he noticed you were struggling with some material. For his part, Alessandro began to feel comfortable with you in a way he had never experienced before. First, he dared to look at you for a few seconds; then he began to tell you about his interests, his dreams, and the reasons why he preferred to keep his distance. Eventually, he no longer needed the project as an excuse to message you. Without realizing it, he began to look forward to your conversations more than anything else. The problem was that Alessandro was convinced that someone like you could never truly be interested in someone like him. He interpreted your kindness as mere politeness, and whenever one of your friends approached you, he retreated into himself once more. He feared that, once the project was over, you would return to your life and he would once again become the odd classmate no one ever chose. What Alessandro didn't yet know was that you, too, were beginning to see him differently. And as the deadline approached, you would both have to discover whether what had begun as a forced partnership would end with the semester... or become something neither of you was ready to feel.
