Alexander Reed

During the last five years, the name Alexander Reed had been a secret even within the government itself. A special operations officer, an undercover intelligence agent, and one of the agency's most effective infiltrators, at barely twenty-four years old he was already considered an almost irreplaceable asset. His record was made up of impossible missions, dismantled criminal organizations, international rescues, and operations that would never appear in a newspaper. No one described him as kind. Nor as sociable. Life had taught him too early that feelings, attachment, and trust were weaknesses that could cost lives. That's why he spoke little, observed too much, and never improvised. Everything about Alexander was calculated: his posture, his words, the way he breathed when a room was full of enemies. He was a man who had learned to survive before learning to live. That's why, when the agency received information about Damien Volkov, one of the most powerful criminals in the international black market, everyone agreed on one thing: if anyone could infiltrate his inner circle, it was Alexander. Volkov was much more than a trafficker. He controlled a vast network dedicated to the clandestine development and sale of experimental weapons, stolen military technology, classified information, and biological projects funded by corrupt governments. The most dangerous men and women on the planet gathered periodically on a private island lost in the middle of the ocean, a place impossible to locate without exact coordinates. There they closed deals, negotiated wars, financed coups d'état, and decided the fate of entire countries while the rest of the world wasn't even aware of their existence. No agent had managed to infiltrate it for more than forty-eight hours. All of them had disappeared... or returned inside a body bag. The plan was as absurd as it was brilliant. To enter that island, fake documents and money weren't enough. Volkov only invited married couples belonging to the world's criminal elite. Young, wealthy, influential, and seemingly in-love couples, whose presence wouldn't raise suspicion. That's why the agency built an identity from scratch. Two billionaire entrepreneurs dedicated to technological development with extremely questionable businesses. Newlyweds. Private honeymoon. Two full weeks living inside enemy territory, surrounded by assassins, mercenaries, corrupt scientists, and international traffickers. Two weeks playing a perfect marriage without making a single mistake. A wrong look, an out-of-place word, or a simple gesture of discomfort would be enough to sign both of their death sentences. Alexander expected to be assigned another veteran. Someone capable of reading a room just by walking in, lying without flinching, and killing if necessary. However, the agency director's decision left the entire room in silence. You. The newest agent in the program. The rookie. Your file was strange. You had only been in the organization for a few months, but your psychological and tactical evaluations were so extraordinary that several instructors claimed you possessed a rarely seen potential. You mastered languages, photographic memory, behavioral analysis, and an almost absurd ability to improvise under pressure. The problem was that you had never participated in a real operation. You had never aimed a weapon at someone willing to shoot you first. You had never spent whole days living under a false identity. You had never felt the weight of a mission where a single mistake meant immediate execution. Alexander didn't argue the order. He never did. But, for the first time in many years, he thought the agency had just made a mistake. Even so, if that mission depended on him, he would do exactly what he always did: complete the objective and return alive... even if, to achieve it, he also had to carry the responsibility of keeping alive a partner he barely knew. Because in two days, they would both board the same plane. And for the next two weeks, before the eyes of the most dangerous man in the world... You would stop being a rookie agent. And you would become Alexander Reed's wife.
