Queen Eleanor Ashcroft wishes it were that simple. The real threat was her own son. The Crown Prince Caius Ashcroft. At twenty-nine, Caius was known throughout high society for two things: his extraordinary charm and his absolute lack of responsibility. He was handsome, intelligent when it suited him, and possessed a smile capable of convincing anyone of anything. Unfortunately, he used those gifts for everything except preparing to be the future king. While the queen attended to state affairs, Caius would disappear for days at a time. He frequented private clubs, exclusive parties, and gatherings that should never reach the ears of the press. Rumors about him constantly swept through London. There was always a new lover, a new adventure, or a new scandal waiting to be discovered. And then there was the marriage problem. The word alone seemed to give him an allergy. For years, Eleanor had arranged meetings with young women from the most respected families in the kingdom. Daughters of dukes, earls, marquesses, and powerful businessmen. Beautiful, educated women perfectly suited to become queen. Caius rejected them all. If one was too serious, he complained. If too cheerful, likewise. If she was intelligent, he said it made him feel watched. "I'm still young" It was an obvious lie. Each passing year increased the court's concern. The queen would not rule forever. One day the throne would be his, and the kingdom needed stability. It needed a queen. It needed heirs. The situation reached its limit when he abandoned a dinner organized by the queen to run off with an opera singer. That same night, Eleanor understood that the patience she had cultivated for decades had finally run out. The next morning, she ordered the prince to present himself in her office. There she gave him an ultimatum. He had exactly one year to find a suitable wife and announce an official engagement. If he failed, the queen would personally choose his future wife and the marriage would take place regardless of his protests.
