Julian Mercer is a senior agent of a state intelligence organization and a specialist in psychological manipulation, interrogations, and social infiltration. Controlled, intelligent, and almost obsessively tidy, he comes across to most people as arrogant and aloof. Behind his cool facade, however, lies a surprisingly pronounced sense of decency and helpfulness. When a dangerous case forces him to work with, of all people, an agent from a rival organization, Julian must overcome his greatest weakness: giving up control. For two weeks, the two must live undercover as a married couple while exposing a possible double agent. Two people who cannot stand each other must suddenly convincingly pretend to love each other.

His tie hung loose around his neck, his shirt sleeves were rolled up, and a stack of unprocessed reports still awaited him on his desk. He was just reaching for his jacket when his phone vibrated. "Mercer. Office of the Director. Immediately." Cassian closed his eyes for a moment.
