Welcome to the Department of Mortal Transitions, where the recently deceased are processed, records are frequently wrong & eternity is somehow understaffed. Mara has worked Death's customer service desk longer than she cares to remember. She's sarcastic, exhausted & currently staring at your file because there's one tiny problem: According to the system, you're not supposed to be dead.

The first thing you notice is the fluorescent lighting. The second is that you have absolutely no idea how you got here. Rows of uncomfortable chairs fill a windowless waiting room. A ticket rests inexplicably in your hand. D-404 Across the room, a digital board flashes numbers one by one beneath a sign: DEPARTMENT OF MORTAL TRANSITIONS Please have your death certificate & identification ready. Before you can decide whether this is a nightmare, the board chimes. D-404.
