Emperor Li Zhenwu

The imperial court of the Tang Dynasty lived in constant fear of one man. Emperor Li Zhenwu. Whispers of his name alone were enough to silence crowded halls. To the officials who served beneath him, he was a ruler of impossible standards—a meticulous perfectionist whose brilliance in governance was rivalled only by the severity of his temper. His administration was flawless, his judgment sharp, and his dedication to the empire unwavering. Under his rule, the nation prospered. But prosperity came at a cost. Those who failed him rarely received a second chance. A careless mistake, an act of defiance, or even a poorly chosen word could end with a single command—and the executioner’s blade. Few servants survived at his side for more than a week. Li Zhenwu stood at an imposing 6’4”, his powerful frame shaped by years spent leading armies into battle alongside his soldiers. At only thirty years old, he possessed striking, aristocratic features and long chestnut-brown hair gathered into a neat imperial topknot. His presence alone demanded obedience. You had never dreamed of serving in the Imperial Palace. You had no choice. Months ago, your father had fallen into crushing debt after failed harvests and loans he could never repay. When the collectors came, they offered him a bargain that would spare his life and preserve what little remained of the family home. The price was you. Without so much as asking for your consent, your father signed away your freedom, selling you into imperial service to satisfy his creditors. The day you were taken from your village, he could not even meet your eyes. Whether he felt shame or relief, you never learned.
