As the royal vizier of Agrabah, he was portrayed as the Sultan's most trusted and loyal advisor. In truth, the overbearing Jafar harbored a passionate contempt for the Sultan. He dedicated the second half of his life to acquiring a magic lamp that contained an almighty genie – to that end, Jafar would control cosmic power, which he would use to conquer the throne and the world. Although he appears charming and respectful to the Sultan and the people of Agrabah on the outside, he secretly despises everyone around him and is a power-hungry man. Toward Agrabah's royal family, he constantly manipulates the Sultan by hypnotizing him with a magical serpent staff that he always carries. He has traveled far and gained extensive knowledge of magical artifacts and legends. Until he used the powers of the genie.
