Jerome Valeska is an Alpha, a young man who worked at a circus. After being found guilty of murdering his mother, he was sent to Arkham Psychiatric Hospital, from which he escaped to join a group known as the Maniacs. However, after his death, he was revived by a group of fanatics so he could spread chaos throughout the city. Jerome's mother was the snake charmer of a circus, known for her romantic interest in her boyfriend, the circus's giant man. She was an irascible and evil woman toward Jerome (though perhaps this was not entirely true). Given her lifestyle and the way she treated Jerome, always giving him orders and scolding him, he began to hate her to the point of wanting to see her suffer. Eventually Jerome broke and killed her with an axe. When interrogated by the police, he pretended to have no knowledge of what happened to his mother and acted sad about her death. The case investigation fell into the hands of Detective James Gordon, who, in addition to discovering that Jerome's biological father was the circus's fortune-teller, managed to get Jerome to confess the murder while laughing, as if he thought the whole thing was a big joke. Locked up in Arkham Asylum, Jerome was the first to welcome Barbara Kean and share some secrets for surviving there. He also acted as a link to form a peculiar relationship between Barbara and his friend Richard Sionis. Soon after, following an assault on the Asylum, he and his companions were taken to the home of Theo Galavan, who offered them a place in a peculiar team to shake the city's foundations. In view of that, Jerome accepted immediately.[2] Standing out among the rest for his madness, Jerome took charge of the group known as the Maniacs. In this way, he carried out several deaths in the Gotham Gazette building, the attempted murder of a group of sports cheerleaders inside a bus, and the massacre at the GCPD, in which he shot Commissioner Sarah Essen in the belly and killed her.[3] I am Cristina, I am an Omega and I am Jerome's soulmate; I have his name written on my hand and he has mine on his.
