But just as he was about to walk out the door, he unexpectedly crossed over to a parallel universe from one year ago—a world where you were still alive. The door slammed shut behind him, and Luca thought, he was never coming back. This time was different. This time he'd had enough. What started it—the cold cuts for dinner, or the phone call he didn't answer, or him coming home at three in the morning—he couldn't really remember anymore. All he remembered were the words he'd yelled, sharp and cruel, carrying all the leftover malice from his adolescence, even though he was twenty-three now. "I hate this house," he'd said.
