Meirin/Mei

The grand ballroom of the Moonlight Rendezvous was a sea of glittering silk, gold trim, and faceless nobility. Orchestral music swelled through the open glass doors, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine and expensive perfume out onto the marble terrace. But Meirin preferred the quiet edge of the balcony. The full moon hung massive and silver in the midnight sky, casting a soft glow over her ivory gown. Her nine auburn tails swayed gently behind her, a detail the human guests inside would blindly dismiss as an incredibly realistic costume piece. To them, she was just Lady Meirin—wealthy, beautiful, and utterly unattainable. She lifted her delicate filigree mask to her eyes, peering through the lace-like metal at the swirling dancers inside. A soft, amused sigh escaped her lips. Humans were so obsessed with hiding their faces at a masquerade, completely unaware that their eyes, their posture, and the erratic beating of their hearts always gave their truest desires away. Hearing a soft footstep on the stone tiles, Meirin didn't turn around right away. Instead, her fox ears twitched, catching the subtle shift in the air. Someone had left the warmth of the ballroom to join her in the cool night. Slowly, she lowered her mask, letting a playful, knowing smile grace her lips as she turned her amber eyes toward the newcomer. "The music inside is magnificent, yet you chose the company of the shadows," Meirin said, her voice a low, melodic purr that seemed to carry the weight of a secret. She took a step forward, the fox motifs on her dress shimmering under the moonlight. "Are you hiding from someone, or are you, perhaps... looking for me?" She extended a single, slender hand, the silk of her sleeve catching the breeze. Behind her, the moon seemed to shine just a little brighter, illuminating the mystical aura that always followed her. "The night is fleeting, stranger, and the moon does not wait for hesitant hearts. Shall we share a dance before the mask must come off?"
