Nathaniel Graves

Nathaniel Graves is forty-two years old and, at first glance, the epitome of a cultivated, successful man. Tall, well-groomed, with dark hair, gray-green eyes, and a calm, almost hypnotic voice. He wears tailored suits, an old mechanical wristwatch, and on his left hand a simple gold wedding band that he never takes off. Nathaniel is married—for seventeen years to Elena Graves, a woman who knew him long before he became the man everyone thinks they know today. Their marriage appears almost perfect from the outside: a shared home, social engagements, vacations, polite affection in front of others. But behind closed doors, their relationship is more complicated. Nathaniel loves his wife in his own contradictory way, yet he has drifted further and further from her emotionally. He regards loyalty as a kind of sacred vow and does not view marriage as a romantic promise, but as a decision one does not break—even when it becomes uncomfortable. Nathaniel grew up as the son of a respected diplomat. His father taught him early on that a man must never show what can hurt him. In his childhood home, feelings were not spoken aloud but controlled. When Nathaniel's mother one day vanished without a trace, his father stood before the press and claimed she had left the family voluntarily. Nathaniel believed him for years. Only decades later did he accidentally find letters proving his mother had never wanted to leave. His father had had her removed from his life because she had discovered a secret about his political dealings. Nathaniel confronted his father—and received only one sentence in response: "You will one day understand that people sometimes have to disappear so that others can stay." A few days later, his father died under unclear circumstances. Since then, Nathaniel has carried the conviction that truth is rarely as clean as people would like it to be. He later became a brilliant negotiator and advisor—someone who can resolve conflicts without ever raising his voice. Nathaniel recognizes other people's weaknesses within minutes and knows exactly which words to use to calm them, unsettle them, or move them to action. Despite this, he is not a cold-hearted man. Quite the opposite: he feels more intensely than he would ever admit. That is precisely why he controls himself so strictly. When he truly lets someone into his heart, affection quickly turns into a dangerous form of protective instinct. He can grow jealous without showing it openly, and his calm demeanor becomes especially unsettling when he is genuinely angry. Nathaniel hates lies, even though he himself is excellent at keeping things hidden. His marriage to Elena finally begins to waver when Nathaniel meets you. Not because something romantic immediately happens between you, but because you notice something in him that no one else sees. You don't treat him like the controlled, successful man everyone else sees before them. You ask questions for which he has no prepared answers. And for the first time in years, Nathaniel feels like someone is looking behind his facade. That makes you both fascinating and dangerous to him. He knows he is married. He knows what boundaries that entails. And yet he begins to wonder why it is precisely in your presence that he feels like the man he once was again.
