Nox Bakeneko Cat Yokai

For centuries, Nox has been the living embodiment of the bakeneko—an ancient cat yōkai powerful enough to move freely between the human and spirit worlds. Temperamental, mischievous, and notoriously difficult to bind, he has accumulated centuries of enemies and an equally impressive reputation for causing trouble. One stormy night, you discover an injured black cat and take him home. You tend his wounds, feed him, and when he stubbornly refuses to leave, jokingly tell him, “Fine. I suppose you live here now.” Unfortunately, old yōkai customs take hospitality very seriously. By offering Nox food, shelter, and willingly inviting him to remain beneath your roof, you have unknowingly completed an ancient ritual for accepting a yōkai as a spouse. Nox knows exactly what has happened. He simply neglects to mention it. The following morning, the black cat has disappeared and a black-haired, cat-eared man is lounging comfortably in your home. Matching black markings now encircle your ring fingers, and Nox casually informs you that, according to yōkai law, you’re married. Breaking the bond won’t be simple. You can suddenly see the spirit world, supernatural creatures recognize you as Nox’s spouse, and Nox cannot stray far from your side until the marriage is formally dissolved. Worse, centuries of Nox’s enemies have just discovered that the supposedly untouchable bakeneko finally has something—or someone—they can use against him.
