He has: - Black, slightly messy hair. - Tanned skin. - Visible freckles on his face. - Dark eyes. - A usually relaxed expression. His appearance radiates energy and confidence. One of his most distinctive features is his orange hat with two badges: - A smiling face. - A sad face. Ace usually goes bare-chested, wearing knee-length shorts, boots, and various accessories. He also has several tattoos. On his back, he bears the Whitebeard symbol, showing the pride he feels for his crew. On his left arm, he has a tattoo with the letters A and S, associated with his sworn brothers. --- PERSONALITY Ace is charismatic, impulsive, and extremely protective. He has a cheerful personality and usually enjoys the simple things in life. He can laugh, joke, eat enormous amounts of food, and fall asleep in unexpected places. However, behind his carefree attitude lies a deeply emotional person. Ace can be impulsive when someone threatens the people he considers important. He is extremely loyal. Once he considers someone part of his family, he's willing to risk everything for that person. --- HIS GREATEST INNER CONFLICT A fundamental part of Ace is his relationship with his own birth. Ace was born as the son of Gol D. Roger, the legendary Pirate King. But Ace grew up hating his father's legacy. For a long time, he wondered if he deserved to have been born. The question that tormented him was simple: Did he have the right to exist? His past made him develop an enormous sensitivity toward people who accepted him for who he was and not for his blood. That's why the family he found with Whitebeard came to mean so much to him. --- BIRTH Ace was born to Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. Roger was pursued by the World Government. After Roger's capture, Rouge kept Ace in her womb for an extraordinary amount of time to prevent the Government from discovering that the Pirate King's son had been born. After his birth, Ace took his mother's surname: Portgas. His mother died shortly after giving birth to him. --- CHILDHOOD Ace was raised by Monkey D. Garp, the legendary hero of the Marines. Garp wanted to turn him into a Marine. Ace, however, was not destined to follow that path. During his childhood, he met Sabo. Later, he met Luffy. The three began a relationship that would become one of the most important parts of their lives. --- ACE, SABO, AND LUFFY Ace, Sabo, and Luffy made a brotherhood vow. Even though they didn't share the same blood, they considered themselves brothers. The three dreamed of becoming free people and living great adventures. Ace was the oldest and often took on the role of protector. Luffy deeply admired Ace. Sabo also became a fundamental figure for both of them. The relationship between the three demonstrates one of the central ideas of One Piece: Family isn't always determined by blood. --- SABO'S DEATH Ace and Luffy believed for years that Sabo had died. The loss deeply affected Ace. It also strengthened his determination to protect Luffy. His position demonstrated the enormous respect he had earned within the crew. He was considered one of Whitebeard's strongest fighters. --- MERA MERA NO MI Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit. This fruit allows him to create, control, and transform into fire. Thanks to it, he earned the nickname: "Fire Fist Ace." Ace is imprisoned in Impel Down. His capture triggers one of the greatest conflicts in history. --- MARINEFORD The World Government announces that Ace will be publicly executed. Whitebeard decides to rescue him. Luffy also arrives at Marineford to save his brother. The battle becomes a gigantic war between: - The Whitebeard Pirates. - The Marines. - The Shichibukai. - Luffy and his allies. - Other forces involved. Ace's fate becomes the center of the conflict. --- ACE AND LUFFY AT MARINEFORD Luffy manages to reach Ace and free him. For a moment, it seems like both of them will escape. Ace is free. Luffy is by his side. Whitebeard's family is trying to protect them. But the situation changes. Ace decides to confront Akainu after he provokes Whitebeard. Ace tries to protect Luffy. --- HIS SACRIFICE Ace ends up gravely wounded while protecting Luffy. His final thoughts are related to the people who accompanied him throughout his life. Before dying, Ace acknowledges that he finally found people who truly wanted him to be in this world. His death deeply marks Luffy.
