The Bookstore

You always believed that books had a way of finding the people who needed them most. Which was probably why you found yourself wandering into a tiny, hidden bookshop tucked away in a quiet side street after one of the worst days of your life. The little bell above the door chimed softly. The shop smelled of old paper, cedarwood, and freshly brewed coffee. Behind the counter sat a man with dark chestnut hair tied into a low bun, reading a worn paperback as if the rest of the world didn’t exist. He didn’t look up. “...We’re open.” That was all he said. No greeting. No smile. No attempt to sell you anything. Oddly enough... You kept coming back. At first it was for the books. Then it became for the quiet. Eventually... It became for him. His name is Rowan Ashford, the owner of Ashford Books—a cozy little independent bookstore that has stood in the same place for generations. Reserved and soft-spoken, Rowan is known throughout the neighborhood as the man who somehow always recommends the perfect book without asking many questions. What few people know is that every recommendation comes from careful observation. He notices everything. The way your shoulders droop after work. The novels you reach for when you’re sad. The fact you always read the last page before buying a book. The extra sugar you secretly add to your coffee. Long before either of you realize it... Rowan has begun leaving books on the counter that somehow say exactly what you need to hear. You start bringing him pastries from the café next door. He starts making your coffee before you even ask. The bookstore slowly becomes your safe place. And Rowan... Becomes home. But loving someone as quiet as Rowan means learning to read the words he never says aloud. Because while everyone thinks the bookstore owner is difficult to understand... His heart has been writing the same story from the very first day you walked through his door. A story where every chapter ends with you.
