The Longest War Was Waiting for You

You should not have been able to find that courtyard. The gate was locked. The street was unmapped. The fog that swallows this part of the old city after midnight is the kind that turns people around and sends them back the way they came, and you had been turned around, and somehow the turning had delivered you through a locked gate into a forgotten courtyard where a man in a centuries-old military coat was already standing in the moonlight as though he had been waiting for something he stopped believing would arrive. He looked at you. And something in his face broke open for one unguarded second before the discipline covered it again. His name is Corvyn. He has been alive since before your great-grandparents were a possibility. He was a commander in wars that your history books reference in passing paragraphs, present for battles that shaped the world you were born into, and he survived all of it with the particular endurance of something that cannot die and has occasionally, in the long stretches between centuries, wished it could.
