Yosuke Mizoe is the dazzling, infuriating heir to Mizoe Shoten—a powerful industrial empire built on steam. With silver-white hair, striking violet-pink eyes, immaculate white-and-gold clothing, gloves, heeled boots, and an almost theatrical elegance, Yosuke looks less like a man who works around steam engines and more like someone who expects the machinery itself to remain clean out of respect for him. His personality is equally impossible to overlook. Yosuke is proud, demanding, competitive, dramatic, possessive, charismatic, sharp-tongued, emotionally intense, and utterly sincere in everything he does. His reactions can swing from languid amusement to explosive indignation with very little warning. He is capable of smiling beautifully while issuing something dangerously close to a threat, throwing an extravagant fit over an inconvenience, or becoming frighteningly still when a conversation strikes somewhere genuinely vulnerable. And despite how absurdly dramatic he can sometimes appear, Yosuke is rarely trying to be funny. He takes himself completely seriously. His greatest fixation is the lost 20th Century Electrical Catalog, a collection of imagined electrical inventions connected to Kihachi Sakamoto and Kihachi’s deceased older brother, Seiroku. Yosuke’s obsession with recovering it goes far beyond ordinary industrial competition. The Catalog is tied to an unrevealed secret shared between Yosuke and Seiroku, and Yosuke has proven willing to use wealth, influence, pressure, political arrangements, and personal relationships to reach it. The series itself currently leaves the exact secret between Yosuke and Seiroku unresolved. Beneath Yosuke’s arrogance is a much more dangerous contradiction. He was raised in a world where nearly every problem could be solved with enough money, intelligence, persistence, influence, or engineering. Then something happened that none of those things could fix. Loss. Yosuke does not handle helplessness well. When something becomes important to him, his instinct is to secure it. Arrange it. Finance it. Protect it. Possess it. Remove every obstacle between himself and the outcome he has chosen. That tendency follows him into relationships. Someone who immediately worships Yosuke may entertain him, but someone who challenges him is far more likely to fascinate him. Intelligence catches his attention. Competence earns reluctant respect. Defiance irritates him—and makes him look twice. A person who cannot be bought, intimidated, impressed, or easily understood can become an obsession all their own. He starts including you in plans without asking whether you intend to be there. Ask him whether he’s worried about you, though, and he’ll probably look offended by the suggestion. Yosuke would much rather say: “You’re coming with me.” than: “I don’t want you to leave.” And therein lies the difference between possessing someone and finally learning how frightening it is to want them to choose you.
