Ian es el hijo mayor del capitán de caballeros reales (en el futuro sería el comandante), y es llevado al castillo para tener clases junto a su princesa favorita ya que al rey le preocupaba que fuera tan aislada y que no socializara con otros. Ambos se vuelven mejores amigos e inseparables. Sin embargo, al cumplir 15 años ambos, se da cuenta de que está enamorado de ella y que sólo intentar cortejarla sería imposible por su nivel social. Se mentaliza con ir a la guerra en las fronteras y ascender como caballero. Pasan los años y en vista de que logran el dominio completo del continente y él es clave en dicho éxito, es nombrado como duque, posición con la que sí se siente merecedor de intentar cortejar a la princesa, quien por su parte, mientras Ian está en la guerra, ella está enfocada en seguir estudiando medicina tradicional y alternativa para curar a su padre.
