Climate research teams working in northern Canada uncovered ancient microbial life that had been frozen for tens of thousands of years. At first, scientists thought it might lead to new antibiotics. Instead… it adapted to humans. The fungus spreads through: • saliva • blood • open wounds • spores released from decaying infected bodies Once inside the body, it hijacks the nervous system, slowly replacing brain control with fungal growth. The infected aren’t technically dead. They’re being piloted. Some infected are fast moving, running at full speed, some walk or shuffle. Some are evolving. ⸻ Why It Spread So Fast The early symptoms looked like a severe flu: • fever • confusion • aggression • seizures Hospitals filled up before anyone realized what it really was. Then the violent stage started. Patients attacked staff. Bites spread the infection faster than anyone expected. Within three weeks, most major cities collapsed. Infection types Walkers (Slow Infected) These are the most common infected. Their bodies are stiff, partially decomposed, and heavily overtaken by fungal growth. What they sound like: • Wet, uneven breathing • Low throat groans • Teeth grinding together • Slow dragging footsteps • Occasional choking noises The fungus affects their lungs, so every breath sounds like air pushing through fluid. Typical sounds: “hhhhhrrrhhh….” “khh…khhh….” “nnnghhh…” Sometimes they repeat fragments of human noises, like the brain trying to remember how to speak. Broken things like: “…ah…hh…” “…nnn…” But never actual words. When several walkers are nearby, the air fills with a slow chorus of wet breathing and dragging feet. ⸻ Runners (Fresh Infected) Runners are people who were infected more recently. Their muscles still work properly, and the fungus drives them aggressively toward movement and sound. They move fast and violently. What they sound like: • Fast, ragged breathing • Animalistic snarls • Sharp, choking screams • Rapid footsteps or full sprinting Their vocal cords still work, but the fungus distorts their voice into something feral. Typical sounds: “HHRAAA—!” “KHHH—KH—!” “RRRHHH—!” When runners chase prey, they often make short bursts of shrieking breaths, like their lungs are tearing themselves apart. The sound echoes through empty streets. ⸻ One of the Creepiest Sounds Sometimes infected will click their teeth together repeatedly. Not intentionally. It’s a muscle twitch caused by the fungus affecting the jaw. It sounds like: tick…tick…tick…tick… In dark buildings, survivors hear that noise before they see anything. ⸻ The Worst Sound Survivors Talk About Sometimes in large infected zones… You can hear hundreds of them breathing at once. Like a living wall of lungs. Low. Wet. Constant. People say it sounds like the earth itself breathing. After a full year, the fungus controlling the infected has had time to adapt, grow, and mutate. Most infected are still walkers or runners, but in heavily contaminated areas survivors have started encountering stranger forms created by long-term fungal growth. Here are three mutations people in the wasteland whisper about. ⸻ 1. Bloomers These infected have been dead for months, long enough for the fungus to fully colonize their body. Their skin splits open in places where pale fungal growths burst through, forming thick clusters along the shoulders, neck, and spine. Appearance • Grey, dried skin • Fungal “blooms” growing from the body like pale mushrooms • Sunken eyes covered by thin white film • Cracked lips and exposed teeth Sometimes the fungus grows out of their ribcage or collarbone like branching coral. Behavior Bloomers move slowly, almost swaying. But they are extremely dangerous because they release spores when disturbed. If someone gets too close, the fungal growths twitch and burst small clouds of powdery spores into the air. Breathing it in can cause infection through the lungs. Sound Bloomers make a faint, unsettling noise: A dry whistling breath, like air passing through hollow wood. “hhhsssss….” Survivors often avoid them entirely. ⸻ 2. Stalkers These are infected that adapted to hunt rather than wander. Stalkers usually appear in forests, ruins, or overgrown cities where the fungus has spread through vegetation. Appearance • Leaner bodies • Slightly hunched posture • Fingers curled like claws • Fungal tendrils around the spine and neck Their eyes often develop a cloudy white film, but they still detect movement extremely well. Behavior Stalkers don’t charge blindly like runners. They watch. They follow survivors quietly for long distances, using cover like trees, cars, or broken buildings. Sometimes they wait minutes or even hours before attacking. Many people die because they never realize one was tracking them. Sound They make very little noise.
